You might think Thai maid service industry is a hotbed of corruption and nepotism, but according to a new report, the industry is one of the safest jobs in the world.
Read moreThe report by global consulting firm Hays Analytics, found that there are roughly 1.6 million maids in Thailand and the majority of them work in salaried jobs, with only a handful of employees earning more than $100,000 a year.
Hays Analytics says that only about 10% of the workforce is employed in salaries.
And although it is not clear how much the salaries are paid to maids, the report claims the average monthly salary for a Thai maid is about $600,000.
In some industries, the vast majority of maids are paid a fixed wage.
Hays says these are paid in cash, in some cases more than the equivalent of $4,000 per month.
“The majority of Thai maid workers are not paid the minimum wage or the minimum income.
They are paid the hourly rate,” said Hays’ director of research, Paul Mungo.
Mungo told news.com.au that the majority, or about 90% of Thai households do not pay minimum wage and most do not even have a minimum wage at all.
“If you think about the wage level, the median wage is around $400 a month.
But the wage for a full-time domestic worker is just around $200 a month,” he said.”
It’s really difficult to work in the maid industry and it’s really hard to get a job.
The minimum wage is only $300 a month and it doesn’t even cover health and safety.
It’s a really poor situation.”
Hays estimates there are about 200,000 maids working in salariat in Thailand.
The majority of those are aged between 16 and 20 and are paid between $400 and $1,200 a day.
“You have a lot of young, inexperienced maids and there’s a lot more competition for work than what you see in the sex industry,” Munga said.
But Hays also found that the maids employed in the salariat sector are often underpaid, with some earning as little as $60 a day, and some as little more than half that.
Hills data shows that in some of the biggest cities like Bangkok, there are many maids earning between $60 and $80 a day and a significant number earning $500 a day or more.
It also found maids who work in these sectors tend to be younger than their peers in other sectors, which can be problematic.
“We think the main thing is to get to know the people and understand the culture of the industry,” said Mung.
“I think most people will want to work here, they just have to be willing to learn a lot about the culture and the way they work and how they communicate.”
But Hews report also found there is a significant amount of fraud going on in the industry.
“In some of our studies we found that one in five maids we surveyed did not have a valid contract,” Mwang said.
Holls research also found more than 10% said they were forced to work without pay.
Mang said while this may be common, it is something that can be avoided by having a contract and being able to tell your employer the date you will leave.
“There are some companies who are actually quite sophisticated and they can verify contracts,” he explained.
“But in the majority the maid is being manipulated.
There’s no good evidence that they are doing this because they can’t get away with it.
It just makes it more difficult for maids to get the jobs they want.”
Munga added that it was important to remember that there is no guarantee that the work will be safe.
“A lot of the maid work in Thailand is illegal.
There are certain areas where they are very dangerous and that’s where they can make their money,” he told news and current affairs.”
So if you want to have an ethical and fair working environment, make sure you can work in that environment.”
